STEM intro

Step 1: Science

Step 2: Technology
As part of our Science programme this year, we have introduced a 'Science Experiment of the Week' in all classes.  The children have had fun exploring and learning about scientific concepts in a fun, and interactive way...and learning that experiments don't always work out as expected the first time round!
Check out the photos below, showing some of the experiments and activities which were conducted by children throughout the year, and some photos of our visit from the Dublin Zoo Outreach programme.

Living Things

Fingerprints!

As part of investigating and experimenting living things, Senior Infants were very lucky to have a visit from the Gardai who explained the differences in everyone's fingerprints. The children then had great fun making a set of their own fingerprints and examining them with magnifying glasses to determine what type of fingerprints they have.

How plants drink?

As part of our Science experiment of the Week which all classes participated in, we placed pieces of celery in containers containing water, red food colouring and blue colouring and watched as the celery stalks changed colour...it took longer than expected!

Environmental Awareness and Care

The whole school participated in a School Walk, around the area.  There was great competition among the children in attempting to be the first to identify and record seasonal change, and of course who could find the most items!

Energy and Forces

Static Electricity

All classes investigated the effects of Static electricity. Different experiments involving drink cans, balloons, rice crispies, and tissue paper were carried out as part of "Experiment of the Week".  Here is the outline of the static electricity experiments provided by some First Class children.

Materials

Lava Lamps

As part of our Experiment of the Week scheme, children had the opportunity to make Lava Lamps. The children were surprised to learn that oil and water do not mix together, and were reminded of a previous experiment ... 'The Dancing Raisins' which was undertaken as part of the Energy and Forces strand.  It was great to see young children making such connections.

Rainbow Milk

This was another extremely fun experiment with instant results! The secrets of soap were explored using milk, food colouring, and some washing up liquid for some spectacular results.

A visit from Dublin Zoo
The Senior Infant children were delighted when Enya visited our school on March 22nd. They got to feel a tiger's fur, touch an elephant's foot and handle a tiger's skull.  They watched how zoo keepers care for elephants' nails, and learned why stripes are so important for some animals that live in rainforests.
